High School Expectation Essay

Congratulations, you’ve made it! You’re officially a high schooler. You’ve bought your notebooks and your pens, your new boots and sweaters, and of course your work supplies, and you’re ready to take on the school. Well… you’re sort of ready. It’s totally normal to be nervous and scared, because honestly, the idea of high school can be terrifying! You don’t what to expect, and often you start to think it’s going to be like something you’ve seen in a movie or TV show.

Before you walk through the doors on the first day, backpack slung over one shoulder, remember: high school may not immediately live up to these expectations. As a freshman, you’re the youngest fish in a big pond. Things WILL get better, but they may never be the way you’re imagining them. Here are the expectations vs. reality of your freshman year of high school:

1. Expectation: You’re in high school now. You’re cool.

Source

Reality: You’re a freshman. You are the least cool class in the entire school.

Source

2. Expectation: You’ll meet a cute new boy and immediately hit it off.

Source

Reality: All the upperclassmen ignore you, and the other freshman are the same ol’ boys who pantsed each other in gym class last year.

Source

3. Expectation: The cafeteria food will be so much healthier and tastier than junior high.

Source

Reality: They call that Mediterranean quinoa? Pull a Regina George and get cheese fries.

Source

4. Expectation: Your teachers will finally treat you like adults.

Source

Reality: They still make you request a pass to go to the bathroom. This is not adulthood.

Source

5. Expectation: You’ll navigate the halls with ease thanks to that tour you took over summer break.

Source

Reality: The halls were empty then. Now they’re filled with hundreds of people and you can’t even find homeroom.

Source

6. Expectation: You can’t wait to learn a foreign language. Parlez-vous français?

Source

Reality: You’ve got the accent down, but you don’t really know what you’re saying.

Source

7. Expectation: You’re going to do your hair and makeup every day and wear stylish outfits.

Source

Reality: You hit snooze five times and end up putting on leggings and throwing your hair in a bun.

Source

8. Expectation: You’re going to stay super organized and keep track of all your homework and assignments, turning everything in on time.

Source

Reality: That was due today?!

Source

9. Expectation: You’ll miraculously be crowned Homecoming Queen and the King will fall in love with you.

Source

Reality: You’ll go to the dance with your best friends, and they’ll ditch you to slow dance.

Source

10. Expectation: You’re going to love high school!

Source

Reality: Is it time to go to college, yet?

Middle School isn’t over; the end is here at last. The parts of my life that seemed never ending are gone for good. I thought I could not wait until high school, but now I wish that it wasn’t here so soon, ending my year as an eight grader. I feel lost as my eight grade year comes to a close. The anticipation I once felt about high school has been replaced with not only fear but also the never ending question of what to expect when I get there.

High school will definitely be different. I find myself often wondering what it will be like. Not knowing what to expect is what scares me the most. I have gone through school always being the little kid. Finally for one year I get to be the big kid and then after all of the wonderful things that have happened this year it is all taken away. Starting high school I will once again be the little kid; the one who doesn’t know how things work. I do not look forward to another three years like that.

What I look forward to is a new challenge. High school is a new challenge waiting for me. There will be so many new and exiting things to try once I get there. I also look forward to reunite with all of my old friends and to be able to drive soon!! I’m also looking forward to only have four classes a day too!!

Though there are things I look forward to, I am afraid of some things too. I really worry that my friends will change and become completely different people than who they are today. I don’t want us to drift apart because I don’t know what I would do without them. Fortunately, I’m confident that all of them will stay true to whom they are and that I will as well.

Aside from all of my doubts and fears I think high school will be a good thing. It will open my eyes to new experiences and provide me with new knowledge. I hope high school will take me places. I never knew I would make it this far in life. Ten years from now, with the help of a good high school education, I see myself as a successful 23 year old. I think high school will prepare me for my future and whatever it may bring. No matter where I go after high school I hope I am happy and doing something I love.
